National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) is an annual celebration of science, engineering and technology which is coordinated nationally by the British Science Association. During the 10-days of this event, museums, science centres and educational institutions across the UK open their doors to the public of all ages allowing them the unique opportunity to become engaged and inspired with science, engineering and technology.
In the College, we actively support young people’s engagement with health sciences and so have participated in this event for several years. During NSEW, the College invites school children from primary schools across Glasgow to come and visit the College and experience what is involved in a career in medicine, surgery or dentistry.
With hands-on practical workshops encompassing everything from laparoscopic surgery to what happens when you visit the dentist, the programme is action packed and really gives the children the opportunity to get involved. There is also the opportunity to speak with many expert clinicians who are Fellows and Members of the College and come along on the day to lead the workshops.
NSEW is an innovative programme which gives the College the opportunity to open to the doors to the physicians, surgeons, dentists and nurses of tomorrow and show them how rewarding a career in medicine or dentistry can be.
Feedback from the school children and their teachers has been excellent with comments including:
"I am very glad we got the chance to visit and I would love to come again."
"When I grow up, I would like to be a doctor or a surgeon"
"Many of the activties you set up were amusing and fun."
Any school who is interested in attending can contact the College for more information on how to be involved in the event next year, which will run from 12th – 21st March 2010.
