As early as 1599 when Peter Lowe first petitioned King James VI to establish a regulatory body to improve medical practice for the safety and health of Glasgow people, Fellows and Members of the College have worked with communities to improve health and healthcare.
In fact, College’s original Royal Charter, charged Fellows and Members with ‘visiting and treating the poor, gratis’. Although now largely a state function, the College still undertakes health improvement through its charitable and philanthropic work.
Our Reach: Far and Wide
From the East End of Glasgow to Malawi in South East Africa, College Fellows and Members work tirelessly, giving up their personal time to establish community based health initiatives, train doctors in poorer countries, and raise funds to support community development and further medical research.
