Basic Surgical Skills 2011-2012

Date: 2011-09-07

This is a 3 day course for trainees anticipating a career in Surgery and preparing for basic surgical examinations.  The course aims to teach safe operating techniques and stresses the importance of precautions for safe theatre practice.

  The programme covers:

Gowning and gloving
Handling instruments
Knots
Suturing techniques
Haemostasis
Handling bowel
Abdominal closure and drain insertion
Skin lesion and LA techniques
Cytology techniques and biopsy
Fine tissue handling
Electro-surgery
Wound management
Endoscopic surgery

Foundation Skills in Surgery

This interactive course provides an introduction to the specific skills of the early stages of surgery. It is suitable for foundation year doctors and final year medical students considering a career in surgery. Come along and help yourself stand out from the crowd.

Surgical Anastomosis Techniques Course

A hands-on practical course designed for surgical trainees wishing to further develop their surgical anastomosis skills. The day concentrates on vascular and bowel anastomotic techniques.

ANATOMY PROGRAMME

Tuesday Evenings - 7 February - 20 March 2012

The Anatomy sessions are for those in early years of training.  They are appropriate for those at all stages of preparation for MRCS examinations but particularly those sitting Part A and will also be useful to doctors in other specialties where knowledge of anatomy is important.  The sessions will include comprehensive revision and access to a wide range of anatomical prosections.

MRCS OSCE PREPARATION COURSE

Date: 2012-04-13

Wednesday 11th - Friday 13th April 2012

The new IMRCS Part B OSCE preparation course will prepare you for the MRCS with interactive teaching methods in small groups, in combination with lectures and teaching with patients. The final day of the course replicates the OSCE style stations of the MRCS examination, allowing you the opportunity to perform in an OSCE exam situation.

Feedback from the faculty will guide you through preparation for the exam covering the four Broad Content Areas of Anatomy & Surgical Pathology, Applied Surgical Science & Critical Care, Clinical and Procedural Skills, and Communication Skills. This course will help you with examination preparation and techniques and you should be familiar with the entire MRCS syllabus before the course.

In small groups led by expert tutors you will learn how to approach each Broad Content Area with confidence.
