Glasgow Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society

Level of Description: Fonds

Extent and Medium of the unit of description: 0.24

Name of creator(s): Glasgow Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society

Administrative/Biographical History
Founded in 1885, the Glasgow Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society was open to general practitioners and specialists for the furtherance of science and art related to midwifery and the diseases of women and children. From 1893 it became one of the first Scottish societies to admit women as members and even promoted a woman, Louise McIlroy, to the post of Vice-President for the period 1912-13. Meetings were held in the Hall of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and concentrated on the discussion of papers and the exhibition of patients and specimens. Proceedings were suspended for the duration of the First World War. In 1924, the Society was reconstituted in order to hold more informal, clinical meetings at Glasgow Royal Maternity Hospital. This proved to be a successful move which ensured the survival of the Society which is still in existence.
