Administrative/Biographical History
Founded as a Pathological Society in 1873 by William Tennant Gairdner, the Society’s aim was to have a limited number of working members meeting monthly for the exhibition and study of patients, drawings, preparations and instruments. At its second meeting, a more clinical aspect was introduced and the Society assumed the name of “The Glasgow Pathological and Clinical Society.” Almost from its inception, the Society met in the Hall of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, and it arranged for the publication of reports of its proceedings to be carried in the Glasgow Medical Journal and in the British Medical Journal. The Society published several volumes of its Transactions. It merged with the Medico-Chirurgical Society of Glasgow in 1907.
