Born in Beith, Ayrshire on 25 September 1886, James Hendry received his medical education at Glasgow University, graduating Master of Arts (MA), Bachelor of Medicine and of Surgery (MB, ChB) and Bachelor in Science (BSc) in 1910. Having chosen to specialise in midwifery, he began extensive postgraduate study on the continent. He returned to Glasgow in 1913 and received an appointment with the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, a hospital with which he was to remain associated throughout his life. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he was a Captain in the University Contingent of the Officers Training Corps and from 1916 to 1918 served in France with the Royal Army Medical Corps, retiring with the rank of Major. He held various appointments within the city of Glasgow including the post of Gynaecological Surgeon to the Royal Infirmary and Medical Director of the Royal Maternity Hospital. He devoted much of his time to committee work and he was an original member of the Council of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in addition to his involvement with the Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust and the Goodenough Committee. From 1927 to 1943 he was Muirhead Professor of Obstetrics and Surgeon in charge of the Gynaecological Department at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. From 1937 onwards he was a member of the Court of the University of Glasgow. In 1943 he became Regius Professor of Obstetrics and Medical Director of the Royal Maternity Hospital. Although the author of several published works, he was best known as a teacher of some distinction. He died in 1945 after a prolonged illness.
