Administrative/Biographical History
Duncan Fletcher was born in Mount Florida, Glasgow, on 11 April 1922. He was educated at Whiting Bay School and Hutcheson’s Grammar School. During five years’ National Service he trained as an engineer and on leaving the Navy returned to Glasgow and graduated from the University’s Faculty of Medicine in 1952. He held appointments in the Southern General Hospital, Western Infirmary, Royal Maternity Hospital and Hairmyres Hospital before returning to the University in 1954 to gain a Diploma in Public Health. He then joined the Public Health Department of Glasgow Corporation and was involved in the polimyelitis and tuberculosis campaigns. He was Deputy Superintendent at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Superintendent at Greenock. He ultimately became Unit Medical Officer in Western and Gartnavel hospitals and sat on the Management Committee of the General Council of Glasgow University.
His magical profession ran alongside his medical profession. He was President of the Scottish Conjurors Association for 30 years, and joined the Magic Circle in 1953 and the Inner Magic Circle in 1976. He died in 1995 at the age of 73.
