Administrative/Biographical History
Arthur Henry Jacobs was born on 16 June 1899 and trained at St Mungo’s College, Glasgow, taking the Scottish triple qualification in 1920. After resident posts he was appointed to the staff of Glasgow Royal Infirmary as a general surgeon and developed an interest in urology. He spent some time training in London with Sir John Thomson-Walker and some further periods in Paris and Vienna. He was appointed urologist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1930 and became chief of the urology department there in 1936. He was a world authority on many aspects of urological surgery.
He was president of the Royal Medico-Chirurgical Society of Glasgow in 1955, president of the British Association of Urological Surgeons from 1957-1959, President of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from 1959-1961 and chairman of the West of Scotland Surgical Association in 1960-1. He retired in 1964 and shortly afterwards received the honorary degree of LL.D. from the University of Glasgow, and in 1965 was awarded the St. Peter’s medal by the British Association of Urological Surgeons. He died on 30 July 1974.
