Library help guides to e-resources

Fellows and members of the College can apply for an Athens password to gain access to a wide range of e-resources through the NHS Knowledge Network.  Details of how to gain an Athens password to use these resources are available to Fellows and Members by emailing library@rcpsg.ac.uk

Guides and online tutorials to help you get the very best out of your research:

  • Quick Guide to using the Knowledge Network (PDF)
  • RCPSG guide on Keeping up to date(PDF)
  • PILOT: Online Information Literacy Tutorial - This online information literacy tutorial created by the Queensland University of Technology is intended to provide undergraduates with the skills and tools to find and manage information effectively. Choose one module to suit your needs or complete all six.
  • Information Literacy Skills e-Learning Course:  Produced by the NHS Education Scotland Knowledge Services Group, an NHS Scotland Athens password is required to access the course.
  • OVID SP: Produced by The Cushing/Whitney Medical Library,  Yale University, 2008.  This is an excellent tutorial taking you through the new OVID Interface,  it lasts about 9 minutes and is full of very useful and well presented information to help you make the most out of the new improved OVID.  Note: There are a couple of references to Yale which you will have to overlook, and please make sure that the sound on your PC is turned on.  Alternatively, use the quick reference guide to OVID here.
  • Cochrane Library: (includes the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) - Wiley InterScience Version.  These short, free courses will give you an introduction on how to access and search this excellent evidence-based resource.  Go to the link provided above and scroll down until you reach The Cochrane Library and click 'Launch Module' next to the module you wish to take.  Although you will be prompted to register these courses are free.
  • Introduction to Evidence Based Medicine: 4th edition, Duke University Medical Center Library and Health Science Library, UNC-Chapel Hill.  This tutorial will help you define EBM, construct a clinical question, construct a search strategy, and identify key issue that help determine the validity of the results of a study.
  • Evidence-Based Answers to Clinical Questions for Busy Clinicians (2008): This workbook helps busy clinicians to find the best available evidence to answer clinical questions, in the shortest possible time.  It introduces the principles of evidence-based practice and provides a foundation of understanding and skills in developing questions that are answerable from the literature; searching for evidence to answer the question and appraising the evidence identified
    for quality, reliability, accuracy and relevance.
