Editorial

Aims of the History of Dentistry Research Group restated.

At a recent meeting of the group our current purpose and future aims were debated, and the following statement was adopted: -

The basic purposes of the group (see HDRG home page) remain valid and should
continue to be pursued.

While the group's interests are without geographical or temporal limit, there are urgent priorities in the local arena. Possible changes in the near future in the Glasgow Dental School make it even more important than ever that the heritage of the past is maintained for the benefit of the future.

The group should undertake collective projects of recording and conservation.

Close co-operation should continue to be maintained with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, as well as with the University of Glasgow and the Lindsay Society.

The Newsletter should continue to be a lively channel of communication as well as a medium for publication of substantial historical articles.

The endowments of the group must be valued and used productively.

The group organisation should be reviewed and, while a formal constitution need not be written at this time, a small executive group of office bearers could be empowered to act on the Group's behalf.

Consideration should be given to an appropriate commemoration of the late founder Chairman, Dr Henry Noble.

Meetings should focus on the presentation and discussion of interesting material rather than pure "house-keeping" and should continue to be held in the middle of the day.
