Back to contents The study of dentistry is a relatively recent activity in Glasgow if we compare the Dental Hospital and School which began in 1879, with the University, founded in 1415, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, founded in 1599, but we have benefited from association with these ancient traditions of scholarship and clinical standards. A rich clinical experience has always been the basis of student teaching in Glasgow, and the outstanding amateur researchers of the School's first century have been succeeded by the professional scientific teams of the current era. John Menzies Campbell, a Glasgow practitioner, was an outstanding historian of our profession and his legacy lives on, not only in his benefactions but also, through his late wife's involvement in the Dental School's Centenary, in the genesis of the History of Dentistry Research Group. The group, whose inspirational founder Chairman was Dr Henry Noble, now has almost 50 subscribing members, meets regularly and publishes a biannual newsletter. We can claim to be one of the largest and most active such local groups anywhere.
