Correspondence
Rufus Ross has sent us a copy of his correspondence with Christopher Sperling, in which he says “Re the unusual notch shown in the attached photograph. My suggestion is that the notches are the remnants of some kind of decoration.” Reader’s suggestions are welcome.

“Rufus, thank you for all the effort. No problem with the time; like your colleagues, I just returned from vacation myself. I am attaching a picture of the small squarish notch located between mandibular molars of our burial. I am very interested in getting your opinion. Although the preservation of the remains was generally moderate to poor, our osteologist estimated that the individual was a female of European descent. Based on characteristics of the grave and context for the site, we believe the individual was a Christian, English woman who died between about the ages of 20 and 35 years probably around 1650 to 1700. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Chris”
