Correspondence Dear Professor McGowan I am an architect undertaking doctoral research into the building type that combines dwelling and workplace. Half my thesis is concerned with the history of this building type, which I am tracing from medieval times to the present day in England. I am aware that it was common, pre-NHS, for dentists to practise in their homes, but I am having difficulty finding examples of buildings to illustrate this. I wonder if you or any of the readers of your newsletter may be able to help here? Ideally I would like both internal and external photographs, with a brief description of how the spaces were organised to accommodate the dual functions of home and dentist's surgery; clearly a plan would also be helpful but this is probably too much to ask! Many thanks for your time Frances Holliss Department of Architecture and Spatial Design/ Cities Institute * * *
